Summary
When choosing a school, parents need to ask many questions and feel good about the responses they receive, as they trust us with their greatest treasures. The questions asked should include: What opportunities will be available for my child in each grade? How will my child be challenged/supported? What successes can you tell me about with regard to these opportunities and challenges? Will my child be safe? This list of questions is far from complete but the answers should provide parents with a core of information from which other questions arise. At EVMS we can provide complete answers and are excited about the opportunity to do so.
What opportunities will be available to my child in each grade? Your child will receive his/her core instruction (Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies) from a three-teacher team in sixth grade, a five-teacher team in seventh grade, and a four-teacher team in eighth grade. Through this design we are able to challenge and nurture adolescents as they move through this stage of life with its accompanying rapid changes.
We know that our children's paths will be varied and exciting, and largely unknown to us. The best way to prepare them is to provide a solid academic core education in traditional subjects and expose them to the necessary skills for functioning in our society, including possible career paths and leisure activities. With this in mind we augment the academic program with an expansive exploratory program in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade which includes art, physical education, technology, music, Life Skills, industrial arts, and Information Power. Through this exposure, students become aware of skills and talents, which may set the stage for wonderful opportunities in their lives.
Extracurricular opportunities include competitive athletic offerings (football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and track) as well as student council, jazz band, newspaper, chess club and yearbook.
With support from our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), opportunities continue to be expanded in our before school programs. These offerings have included Chess Club, and Jazz Band. An additional after school art program is being offered with the support of the Vail Valley Youth Foundation.
